Lany Sivongsay Avakian is one of WCC’s treasured nurse practitioners. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fresno State with a Bachelor of Science in nursing as a Dean’s Medalist, then went on to UC San Francisco, where she received her Master’s degree in nursing with a minor in complementary alternative medicine. Prior to Women’s Cancer Care, Lany has worked at UC Davis Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center and had internships at Stanford, UCSF Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical System in San Francisco, and Kaiser Permanente. Despite her love of science, Lany’s favorite part of her job is the human connection. She feels privileged to journey with patients as they transition through different stages of cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment then healing to follow-up care. She is passionate about providing holistic care by helping and empowering patients to push through the suffering and heal the mind, body, and spirit.
When she’s not at work, Lany loves traveling to new places and revisiting traditional places that are near and dear to her family. Her hobbies include skiing, scuba diving, biking, hiking, house-boating, camping, reading magazines, and relaxing at the spa. She also loves mixing great food with new experiences—and bringing family and friends along to enjoy them. As a refugee from Laos, Lany had a humble upbringing, but she was raised in a loving home. She is now married with two “wonder-full” children, and she couldn’t be happier to be part of this community.
Lany is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the California Central Valley Oncology Nursing Society.
Lany enjoys giving back to the community she loves. She is a proud Board Member of the Laotian American Community of Fresno.
